The Washington, D.C., area is home to more than a dozen paintball tournaments that cater to the local scene.
Some of the tournaments, including one in the city’s downtown, have held big-name talent, like Ryan Jones, the former NFL quarterback for the Houston Texans.
But others, including those in the nation’s capital, have not.
A new one called Paintball World has been in the works for more than three years, and it is expected to expand into the District.
The event, which is sponsored by the Washington-based Paintball Players Association, has been operating under a different name, but its main name remains the Paintball Pro League.
“I think that name is a great name,” said Ryan Jones.
“It’s not a logo, it’s not the name of a company, it says something about the sport.”
Paintball players, or paintballers, are usually a fairly small segment of the professional sports world, with an average age of 25 and roughly the same number of years of experience as the average player in the NFL.
But they are a sizable presence in the hobby.
In the United States, they represent an estimated 35% of the population and are responsible for about 15% of all paintball games, according to the National Paintball Association.
“There’s a very large audience for paintball in the U.S.,” said Matt Gage, the founder of the Washington, DC-based paintball-related video game company DreamWorks.
“If you have a lot of people in the United Kingdom and Germany and Canada who play paintball, you’re going to see a much larger audience than the U-K and the U, the United states.”
Gage is well known in the paintballs scene for his work on the popular game of D&D.
He’s also known for his efforts to create a game based on his own childhood, The D.E.A. (pronounced “Dee-A”) in the early 1990s.
He created a game called D&Ds Fantasy Flight with his brother, Tom.
“Tom was the one that first brought us up with D&d,” said Gage.
“He said, ‘I want you to make a game that is about your childhood.’
He said, If I can make a D&ds game that was a kid’s game, and I can put you guys in a world where the world is just as cool as it was then, then I want to make it.”
But it wasn’t until the early 2000s that D&DS really caught on in the world of video games, and D&DD soon became the dominant platform for playing the game.
In 2001, D&DF launched an online version called The D&df World Tour, which gave players access to more and more online multiplayer options.
That same year, DreamWorks released a game known as The Dukes of Hazard, which was based on the television series The Office.
“DreamWorks was very supportive of us with The Daughters of Hazard,” said Tom Gage of Daughters.
“They just loved it.
They said, You’ve got to make the best game that’s possible.
And we did.”
In 2007, Dreamworks created The Dixie Cup, a new online multiplayer game for paintballs that focused on teamwork and competitive play.
It became the most successful online paintball game of all time, with more than 14 million players worldwide.
By 2012, Dixie Cups had more than doubled in popularity, according the game’s creator, DreamFarms Interactive.
But the popularity of the D&DM and Dukes games did not translate to the popularity in the real world, which did not take to them.
“The people that were watching the television [games] did not understand the game that much,” said Sean Smeed, the creator of Dixie cups.
“You’re playing a game of paintball where you’re playing against someone who’s playing paintball.
That’s not really the same game as, you know, paintball.”
“The Dukes and the Daughters are very niche,” Gage added.
“What they did is, they made it fun, they gave people a fun experience.
And people loved it, and they liked that the game was fun, but they didn’t like the idea of it being about them.
And that’s what they lost.”
That was one of the big differences between the games and the reality of the real-world experience.
“One of the main things about playing paintballs, the game is a lot about teamwork,” said Dave Wilson, a game designer at D&DE.
“But the real thing about paintball that’s different is that it’s a team game.
That means you’re in charge of the team, and you’re not just a person, you have to have a skill set that is useful to the team.”
